My Reflections on Teacher Professionalism and the Case of Mr. Leung
This module deepened my understanding of "professionalization" and "proletarianization" in the context of teaching. Professionalization represents a shift towards standardized practices, measurable outcomes, and external regulation in education. Conversely, proletarianization describes the erosion of professional status, autonomy, and specialized knowledge, often accompanied by increased workloads and diminished respect. I particularly enjoyed reading "The Dynamics of Teacher Professionalism in an Asian Context." While theoretical concepts are important, the case studies provided tangible examples of how these concepts play out in real-life scenarios. Case Study 5, featuring "Mr. Leung the authoritarian," resonated with me. It reminded me of a high school teacher whose strict, results-oriented approach mirrored Mr. Leung's.
